ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - Hundreds of people gathered in McCadden and Elmwood parks Saturday morning, taking part in what are called “No Kings” protests.

The protesters said they disagree with many of President Trump’s policy decisions since his reelection.

“We want health care. We want national parks. We want science.”

“We don’t want chaos. This is part of that democracy that you see right now,” Founder of Roanoke Indivisible Ivonne Wallace Fuetes said. “We were really talking about all of the damages that were being forced upon us with cuts to things like Medicaid, attacks on our science and education infrastructure. Right now, this is really about who gets to decide what kind of government we have.”

The string of protests also comes amid pushback against increased ICE enforcement in Los Angeles, a topic many in Saturday’s protest felt strongly about.

“We have people that are trying to create a better life for themselves coming over the border because they’re fleeing violence and persecution. And we need to allow these people to come over. They want to work here, One protester said. ”They have been building America. America was built by immigrants. It is still being built by immigrants.”

There were other No King Protests in several of our hometowns, including Lynchburg, Radford, Rocky Mount, and Christiansburg.
