New River Valley
Jen comes to Blacksburg after spending more than two years reporting at our affiliate in South Bend, Indiana. She is excited to call the New River Valley her home.
During her time in South Bend, she reported on the night beat at WNDU, the NBC affiliate in town. Jen covered anything from the 500-year flood to hit Michigan and Indiana to the national opioid crisis after a prominent area doctor was shot and killed by his patient’s husband over an addiction. Toward the end of her time at the station, she had an opportunity to anchor their Sunday morning show for several months.
At WNDU, Jen had a number of opportunities to cover the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the incredible fans that would root them on each and every home football game. She was tasked for two seasons to find news angles at the games to add to the station’s exclusive coverage.
In South Bend, Jen also had a chance to interview people like Trisha Yearwood and presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg, the Mayor of South Bend. She even learned how to tell stories in two different time zones, as Michiana spanned both the Central and Eastern Time Zones. Jen is excited to use her experience to add to your hometown stories.
She spent most of her childhood in Canfield, OH just outside of Youngstown and in the Pittsburgh area. Jen’s family currently resides in Northern Virginia. She is thrilled to live and work much closer to them!
Jen received her Bachelor’s from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA where she studied broadcast journalism, public relations and advertising. At Duquesne, she spent much of her free time volunteering at Duquesne Student Television and writing frequently for the school paper, The Duquesne Duke. Senior year she was the general manager of DSTV.
Jen also received her Master’s from Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications where she studied broadcast and digital journalism. During her time in graduate school, Jen had the opportunity to follow and cover former Governor John Kasich during the 2016 New Hampshire and New York primaries, and her work aired on WKBN in Youngstown, OH. Also, during her 2016 summer capstone program, she worked as a correspondent in our Nation’s Capital. Jen reported for several TV stations in Texas including: KLBK in Lubbock, KTAB in Abilene, KAMR in Amarillo and KFDX in Wichita Falls.
Jen has had a variety of internships including: Morning Edition for WESA, the NPR affiliate in Pittsburgh; Marketing/Sales at WTAE, the ABC affiliate in Pittsburgh; News and Investigative team at WJLA, the ABC affiliate in D.C; and News at Time Warner Cable News (now Spectrum News) in Syracuse, NY.
She is a huge Philadelphia Eagles, Philadelphia Phillies and Pittsburgh Pirates fan. Jen also loves to travel. She spent an undergraduate semester abroad in Rome, Italy and got to both see history unveil as Pope Francis was elected and meet her extended family. In her free time Jen likes to run, practice yoga, play the piano and teach indoor cycling and boot camp classes. She also runs her own business to help people find natural solutions for their health issues.
