David Hughes became the News Director at WDBJ7 in the summer of 2016. Hughes led the way as WDBJ7 more than doubled the amount of news it produces each week and was instrumental in the launch of our second channel, WZBJ24.

Before moving to Roanoke, Hughes served as the Executive Producer at WFLA in Tampa, FL. He spent nine years working in the Sunshine State but the Southeast will always be home for Hughes. He grew up in Cary, NC and spent several years working for WRAL in Raleigh. Hughes’ career also took him to Macon, GA where he worked as a producer.

When not working, there is a good chance you will find Hughes running on one of our area’s beautiful greenways. He has completed five half marathons and dozens of other road races. Hughes is also a big NC State Wolfpack fan and loves attending any sporting event, especially ACC football.

Hughes has a true passion for telling stories and serving his community. Hughes said, “As broadcasters, we have a huge responsibility to the people of our Hometown. Our viewers look to us to inform, entertain and also keep them safe. I take that responsibility very seriously and am thrilled to lead that absolute best news team around.”

Hughes is always looking for feedback from viewers. You can email him at david.hughes@wdbj7.com or follow him on Twitter at @tvproducerdave.
