Hometown Eats: Cafe Xpress in Salem

SALEM, Va. (WDBJ7) There seems to be a trend in Southwest Virginia that some of the best, local, spots to eat at just so happen to be located next, or attached, to a gas station.

Cafe Xpress in Salem is no different. They're serving up subs made with a lot of love.

Owner Prakass Malakar believes in doing everything in-house, from special seasoning blends to actually roasting the meat they use on the subs.

"To be fresh. You eat for your health, and that’s the reason we roast our own meats here," Malakar said.

That's why its so popular with the regulars. Cafe Xpress serves up flavors you can't get anywhere else.

"A lot of places if you go there often, things start tasting the same. That’s never the case here,” said Tom Mabry.

Malakar is bringing flavors and seasonings from his home country of Nepal to the folks in Salem.

The Roanoker and steak, egg and cheese subs are must trys. But if you want to try some really unique items, go for the Tandoori Chicken sub or the burger.

Malakar marinates the tandoori chicken for two days before it's actually served.

"Unlike anywhere else," said WDBJ7's Josh Birch. "They let this marinate for two days and it has soaked up all of those flavors.”

The burgers are packed with special seasoning and ginger, then topped with a house-made tomato chutney, giving it an unbelievable, and unique flavor.

"I think their hamburger is awesome. It’s one of the hidden gems in the entire valley in my opinion,” Mabry said.

Cafe Xpress is located at 206 Apperson Dr, Salem, VA 24153. Their number is (540) 444-7364.
