Hometown Eats: Diamond Hill General Store in Moneta

MONETA, Va. (WDBJ7) If you're driving through Moneta or towards Smith Mountain Lake, there's one store you just have to stop into. The Diamond Hill General Store has history in Bedford County dating back to the 1850s.

At Diamond Hill, you'll find everything you could want - gas, snacks, homemade products, local beer and wine, and really, really good food.

"Our mission statement in the beginning was that we wanted to service everybody,” said co-owner Christine Brodt.

That same mission holds true today. While the place has been around for more than a century, the food is progressive, and delicious.

Take for example the Diamond Hill sub. It's piled high with deli meat, topped with lettuce, tomato, jalapenos and finished with a top secret ingredient -- Diamond Hill's famous coleslaw.

"It’s the same recipe they’ve had for over 25 years," said Chef Ryan Landau. "People absolutely love it.”

People also love Diamond Hill's take on the famous Monte Cristo sandwich. It's usually packed with ham, turkey, cheese and then deep fried and finished with powdered sugar and some type of jam or syrup.

At Diamond Hill, there's no frying involved, and they're adding in a third tier of bread smothered with homemade strawberry preserves.

"You get that sweetness from the preserve they’re using. Then the meat and cheesiness. Oh my, this thing is worth the drive from anywhere,” said WDBJ7's Josh Birch.

Diamond Hill General Store is located at 1012 Diamond Hill Rd, Moneta, VA 24121. Their phone number is (540) 297-9309.
