BLACKSBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) It's described by the locals as the unofficial center of Blacksburg. Since 1974, Gillie's has been a staple in downtown and has only grown over the years.

What started as an ice cream parlor has expanded into a full breakfast, lunch and dinner restaurant. The locals say they've been coming several times a week for decades.

“It just reflects 50 years of history and people doing things their own way and knowing everyone who lives around here,” said Jim Hamon.

Gillie's is serving up something for everyone -- for vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike.

The locals say it is the best place in town to get breakfast. One of the must-trys is their banana walnut french toast, featuring fresh, local bread from right next door at Bollo's.

They mix banana, walnuts, brown sugar and butter, and then pour it all over the fresh bread.

"The sauce is so rich and you can taste the freshness of the bread that they are using. Baking it right next door makes all the difference,” said WDBJ7's Josh Birch.

A popular lunch item is the black cat sub, which features blackened catfish on freshly-made french bread.

“I want a healthy diet, and I want it to be tasty, and here it is,” said Carl Zipper.

Don't forget to try their fresh-made juices too!

Gillie's is at 153 College Avenue, Blacksburg, Virginia. Their phone number is (540) 961-2703.
