SALEM, Va. (WDBJ7) Feeding America Southwest Virginia collected over 7,000 more pounds of food this year during the holiday season. Food Lion customers were able to buy prepackaged food boxes that included items typically requested by Feeding America Southwest Virginia such as peanut butter, pasta, and canned green beans.
The organization says the increase is just in time for the winter months when there is a spike in needy families. Amanda Allen of Feeding America Southwest Virginia said, "Some of the areas along the border are experiencing high unemployment, so that is making it a struggle for a lot of people who lives in those areas."
All the food collected over the holiday season will be distributed to over 300 area food banks and organizations in 26 counties and nine cities in Southwest Virginia.
