BATH COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ7) In Bath County over the weekend, a 12-year-old was struck by lightning while visiting relatives and later died. Officials are still investigating.
In a now quiet forest glade, on one particular tree, a scar, left by lightning.
"Right before 5 o'clock on Saturday our sheriff's office received a 911 call," Bath County Sheriff Robert Plecker said. "And the nature of that call was a child had been struck by lightning."
The children had gone out to play after the rain stopped.
"Kind of weird that lightning hits after the storm goes through," Plecker said.
The boy's relatives immediately rushed for help, which arrived within minutes. The 12-year-old was taken to a hospital.
"And the weather was still bad enough that the helicopters couldn't fly," Plecker explained. "So then he was transported by mobile unit to Roanoke."
He died the following morning.
"It's a stunned to everybody in this community," Plecker said. "I don't want to see it happen to anybody, I can tell you that. I feel for the family My heart goes out to the family, and any support that we can, we'll offer it."
