12-year-old Danville girl is in intensive care in Roanoke after being hit by a truck at a bus stop on Wednesday

DANVILLE, Va. (WDBJ) - Danville Police say 81-year-old, David Durham, was trying to pass a stopped bus when he allegedly crossed a double yellow line, hitting a 12-year-old girl coming home from middle school.

A witness says the impact of that crash was so loud, he heard it all from a roof five houses away.

"I heard a loud boom and I saw the child rolling down the street in front of the truck." said witness, Michael Harris.

Michael Harris was working on a roof, when he saw a school bus stopped at the corner of Elizabeth Street and Haynesworth Drive. He reached down to pick something up, then saw a pick up truck go around the bus and hit a 12-year-old girl crossing the street.

Lieutenant Richard Chivvis says they're are trying to determine why Durham didn't simply stop and wait.

"Regardless of whether it's driver distraction or impatience either way, it almost cost a life and is dangerous, so regardless drivers, all of use need to pay attention to stopped school buses." said Lieutenant Chivvis.
