MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WDBJ7) Three agencies are investigating an incident in which a man led police on a pursuit Thursday night, according to the Martinsville Police Department.

Around 9:30 p.m., the Martinsville Police Department was conducting a checkpoint in the area of Clearview Drive and Royal Drive. During the operation, officers saw a white Ford Mustang approach the checkpoint. Before entering the checkpoint, the Mustang made an illegal U-turn, hitting the curb on Clearview Drive and accelerating away very quickly.

Officers followed the Mustang with their lights and sirens on for about two miles before they lost sight of the car, thus stopping the pursuit. The pursuit reached speeds of 85 miles per hour.

Officers then searched for the Mustang and found it off the roadway and unoccupied at the intersection of Nautica Way and Beaver Creek Drive. Officers then heard what appeared to be a single gunshot in the wooded area about 150 yards from the Mustang. Officers and deputies from the Henry County Sheriff’s Office quickly established a perimeter. With the help of a K-9, thermal imaging and tactical gear, law enforcement saw a man with a single gunshot wound.

Henry County Sheriff’s Office is handling the investigation relating to the scene in the wooded area and the recovered vehicle. Virginia State Police is handling the crash investigation. Martinsville Police Department is handling the pursuit investigation.
