Atheist billboards in Bedford County create controversy

BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ7) New billboards in Bedford County are causing quite a bit of controversy. Sponsored by American Atheists, both are suggesting people skip church on Christmas Day. The two signs are located along 460 East. The one near Thaxton reads "Make Christmas Great Again. Skip Church." The other, near the Botetourt County line is a conversation between two teenagers in which one teen says she's not going to church on Christmas.

American Atheists National Program Director, Nick Fish, says it's a way to bring awareness to the topic. The organization wants to let those who may be ashamed to admit their religious preference that it's okay to be yourself.

The billboards will remain up until December 25th.
