ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) - The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSOM) participated in Match Day for the fifth year.
Match Day is the day medical students nationwide find out what residency program they will attend and in what city.
The medical students opened up their envelopes privately at noon to find out where they will continue their medical education, according to spokesman Alison Matthiessen.
The students then gathered in an auditorium to announce where they are going and pin their picture on a map.
The event was an Alice in Wonderland type theme "March Match Madness". School leaders kicked off the event the in costume dressed as the mad hatter among other characters. Teacups with factoids taped on them about the school's accomplishments were handed to students to read.
According to Matthiessen, so far, with four graduating classes of around 40 students each year, VTCSOM has had a 100 percent match rate, meaning all students have been placed during this extremely competitive process into a residency program upon graduation.
