PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ7) - Virginia State Police say speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in a crash that killed one person early Sunday.

The crash happened shortly after midnight on Whitmell School Road, three miles north of Mt. Crossroad in Pittsylvania County.

Police say a Ford F-150 pickup was headed north on Whitmell School Road, when the driver ran off the left side of the road, hit an embankment and overturned.

Three people riding in the bed of the truck were thrown. 19-year-old De Andre Najee Smallwood Davis was pronounced dead at the scene; the other two were taken to hospitals.

The driver and two passengers in the passenger area of the truck were not wearing seat belts and were hurt; they were taken to a hospital.

Charges are pending, according to police.
