A pastor in the rafters: Salem pastor living on church roof for a good cause
In Salem, a pastor is camping out for a good cause, but you won't find him in the woods. He just so happens to be on the roof of his church.
Pastor Thomas McCracken of CommUNITY Church in Salem is raising money and donations to deliver 1,000 bikes to children in Houston this Christmas.
McCracken said his family endured a bad storm in Guam years ago. He said he didn’t have time to think about Christmas and presents and wants to give back to children who may have lost everything.
Starting out Monday morning, he said he wouldn’t eat a crumb until he got enough donations for 250 bikes.
"I felt so strongly about this unique thing that I thought, we're gonna need something to stick out," he said. "So let's get the momentum going, draw some awareness, get some attention to this community. Let people see the crazy guy on the roof and it's for the children so I'm willing to do anything."
Already he said people, even strangers, have been stopping by. Many bikes are being stored in the church’s sanctuary and hallways.
As of Tuesday night, McCracken said on Facebook that they've raised about 18-thousand dollars. It’s not clear whether he’s had anything to eat.
