CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) The town of Christiansburg was recognized for its work with finding missing people in the area on Thursday.

The AWARE Foundation presented T-shirts to Mayor Mike Barber and his office in Council Chambers.

Officials said it's important to have a strong relationship with the town if and when an emergency happens.

AWARE Foundation President Kenny Jarels explained, "Having the Mayor as one of your best friends doesn't hurt. He fully supports me in everything I do and I'm glad that I have a friend like Mayor Barber."

Mayor Mike Barber added, "It's just a further step to creating a sound, safe environment, not only for our children and our students, but for our adults as well."

Also present was Aysia Lewis, the Christiansburg teen who went missing last year and was found with the help of the AWARE Foundation.
