UPDATE: Person dies in motorcycle accident on Interstate 81 in Roanoke County near Exit 137

ROANOKE CO., Va. (WDBJ7) Virginia State Police have released the name of the motorcyclist killed in a morning crash on Interstate 81. Troopers say Hazel Mae Underwood was killed when her bike hit a guardrail.

The crashes have been cleared.

Roanoke County – Virginia State Police Senior Trooper D. P. Purcell is investigating a fatal motorcycle crash which occurred at 8:10 am on Interstate 81 northbound at the 138 mile marker in Roanoke County.

A 2008 Honda VT750 was traveling north on Interstate 81 in the right hand lane when the driver lost control, ran off the right side of the roadway and struck the guardrail. There were no other vehicles involved.

The driver of the Honda motorcycle was Hazel Mae Underwood, 71, of Salem, VA.

Ms. Underwood was wearing a helmet and died at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.


A person died in an accident involving a motorcycle on Interstate 81 North on Monday morning.

The accident happened on I-81 North at mile marker 138, which is near Exit 137.

According to state police, four separate accidents happened in the area on I-81 South.

There are backups of around three miles in both directions.

The right lane is closed. As of 8:53 a.m., the accident was causing a 2-mile backup for northbound traffic, according to VDOT.

A separate accident is slowing I-81 South in the same area. The southbound accident is causing a 3-mile backup, according to VDOT.
