UPDATE: Warrant states two-year-old was alone when he accidentally shot himself
Court documents indicate a two-year-old boy was alone when he accidentally shot himself earlier this week, resulting in the child's death.
In a search warrant filed in Roanoke City Circuit Court police summarized their conversations with witnesses, following the child's death,
"The toddler in question was in a room by himself when they heard a pop and discovered a wound to the child's head," police wrote of their conversations with witnesses.
Police started investigating the shooting Tuesday, when officers pulled over a vehicle and were told by the driver that they were on their way to the hospital to seek treatment for a toddler who had been shot.
Officers say they searched an apartment at 3441 Bennett Drive and found the handgun in a room where they believe the shooting happened.
Among the items investigators seized at the scene were a pistol, a gun box and ammunition.
Another warrant states that during the investigation, police also found a gun magazine in the vehicle.
Roanoke Police say a two-year-old accidentally shot himself and later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.
Police say they were flagged down by a vehicle shortly after noon on Tuesday on Melrose Avenue at Peters Creek Road NW before an adult male and female in the vehicle advised officers that their son had shot himself inside of their home.
Police say the child was transported to the hospital and later pronounced dead at 12:49 p.m.
Officers say no charges have been placed at this time.
