According to the

, Americans are expected to spend of $20 billion on Valentine's Day in 2019 and $1.9 billion of that goes to flowers. Every year it's the number one day to buy flowers with 35% of Americans expected to purchase bouquets this year.

"Over the years, and decades I guess, flowers and roses have been the symbol of love, and I think that is the big factor in people wanting to give flowers," Mark Campbell, the owner of

in Roanoke, said.

He started getting ready for the day that's all about love back in December and in the days leading up to Valentine's Day, Campbell's busy hands were hard at work creating beautiful symbols of love.

"We put in a lot of hours for Valentine's Day. Usually, I'm here all week from about 2 a.m. until 7 p.m. in the afternoon," Campbell said.

Before these flowers even got to the shop and eventually to your homes, even more work is put into growing, harvesting, and shipping them. While a lot of the flowers are locally grown, more flowers come from out of state and even out of the country.

"A lot of roses come from Ecuador," Campbell said. "A lot of product comes from California, a lot comes from Hawaii. Things come from Peru and England, and all of those places."

Just like any other type of gardening or farming, weather is key.

"We've had a lot of product that's come from California through the past year that has not been good quality product because of the weather that different regions have," he explained.

The good news for consumers is that the cost increase is often minimal even during the poor farming seasons.

"Sometimes it does, but not a big impact," Campbell said. "We just switch to regions that grows them that hasn't been impacted."

And with flowers being grown all over the world, it can be easy for some company's not give you quality products, which is why Campbell stresses the importance of buying from your local florist.

"There are a lot of order gatherers as we call them out there that know nothing about flowers so always make sure you're talking to a local florist and that way you're going to get exactly what you're looking for."

He said to make sure the florist has a local address and a local phone number. He explained that big flower corporations may be the first company you see on Google, but there's no guarantee they're going to send you high quality flowers.
