Apex Energy requests permit from Botetourt County for taller wind turbines

BOTETOURT CO., Va. (WDBJ) -- The company behind Virginia's first-ever on-shore windfarm is requesting permission from Botetourt County to build turbines more than 100 feet taller.

Apex Energy was originally approved for 550 foot wind turbines at its Rocky Forge site off Route 220 just north of Eagle Rock. Now, the company is seeking approval to bump up the maximum height to nearly 700 feet.

Apex says that would allow it to build 22 instead of 25 turbines, but still supply the same amount of energy.

That request will have to be approved by the Botetourt County Board of Supervisors.
