BUENA VISTA, Va. (WDBJ7) The Appalachian Trail has a profound impact on the communities it runs through. Many of the towns get an official distinction of "Appalachian Trail town," which puts them on the map for AT hikers. With this distinction, the hikers know to look for that specific town when they reach that point of their trek.
In 2009, the small southwest Virginia mountain town of Buena Vista received that official distinction and since then revenues has poured in. That year, the city measured the meals and lodging total sales at $4.7 million. Then in 2012, the total sales reached $5.1 million and last year the sales were all the way up to $5.7 million.
The Appalachian Trail has brought a sense of pride to Buena Vista. See the video to learn more.
