Appomattox man gives 600th platelet donation to the American Red Cross

BLACKSBURG, Va. (WDBJ) An Appomattox farmer is celebrating a major milestone with the American Red Cross.

Friday, Phillip Lucado gave his 600th platelet donation.

He started donating whole blood in 19-73, when he was 18 years old. Then in 19-96, he began donating platelets and he has not stopped since.

"I've only gave whole blood one time since 96. So it's taken me 22 years to reach the 600th donation," Lucado said.

Platelet donations are a big need in hospitals because the shelf life of a platelet donation is only five days.

One bag of Lucado's platelets helps up to three people. He says in the next 20 years, he hopes to reach 1000 donations.
