Authorities warn of 'dispatch center' phone scam

BEDFORD Co., Va. (WDBJ7) -- Both Bedford and Amherst County authorities are warning of a phone scam where a caller claims to be from the local dispatch center and asks for personal information.

"Do not give out any personal information over the phone. These callers can spoof the number you see on your caller ID to look legitimate, but it is not," Sheriff Michael J. Brown stated in a news release Thursday.

Residents are advised to hang up if they receive a call from the scammer. If anyone doubts the call; the non-emergency number for the Bedford Dispatch Center is (540) 586-7827.

"Unfortunately, our 946-9300 is showing up on caller ID. This is a scam! Please don't give any personal information to anyone by phone," the release stated.
