ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) They say It's better to give than to receive, and it seems people are taking that holiday sentiment to heart even more than usual this year.
Initial returns show people donated $168 million during Giving Tuesday this year. That number is up 44 percent over last year's total.
Experts say it's important to check out any charities before you hand over money because there are a lot of scammers trying to take advantage of the season.
"This'll be the time when everybody is sending out their solicitations, trying to get the year end donations in, and this is the time of the year where we want to give. We want to help others," The Better Business Bureau of Western Virginia CEO
