UPDATE: Victim identified in Roanoke shooting

Roanoke Police have identified the victim in Friday's shooting near 24th Street N.W. at Salem Turnpike.

Markell Trevon Girty, 23, of Roanoke was shot in the 700 block of 29th Street N.W., and drove his vehicle away from the area due to his injuries.


The man found with a gunshot wound at the scene of a two-vehicle accident near 24th Street N.W. at Salem Turnpike has died from his injuries Friday.

He was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital following the accident and pronounced dead at 3:43 p.m.

Police say his identity is known, but will not be released until his next of kin is notified.

An autopsy will be done by the Medical Examiners Office.

Police say the vehicle being driven by the now-deceased man was traveling east on Salem Turnpike and struck the second vehicle which was westbound making the turn north onto 24th Street.

No arrest have been made at this time.

At 2:48 p.m. Friday, Roanoke Police were dispatched to the area of 24th Street N.W. at Salem Turnpike regarding a car accident.

When they got to the scene, they found a two-vehicle accident.

Roanoke Fire and EMS responded to the scene, and began treating all the people involved in the accident.

During the treatment of one of the male victims, first responders found a gunshot wound. He was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.

A female from the second vehicle was also taken with non-life threatening injuries.

The vehicle crash is not believed to be connected to the gunshot injury at this time.

Detectives and the Forensics Services Unit are on scene and continuing the investigation.


An active crime scene has 24th Street closed between Melrose Avenue and Salem Turnpike in Roanoke.

Part of Loudon Avenue is also closed off to Salem turnpike.
