Bassett man arrested following Sunday night shooting in Martinsville

MARTINSVILLE, Va. (WDBJ7) A Bassett man has been arrested following a shooting Sunday night in Martinsville.

Telvin Hairston, 23, was identified as the suspect and later arrested.

According to Martinsville police, officers responded to a shots fired call in the 100 block of E. Market St. around 9:36 p.m. Sunday. The victim told investigators that he was approached by two men in a vehicle. After a short conversation, the victim said the passenger pulled out a shotgun and started firing.

Several pellets hit the victim’s clothing but he was not hurt. An office building in the 200 block of Broad Street was hit by gunfire.

Hairston was found in a vehicle on Northside Drive. He is charged with felony counts of attempted murder, shooting a firearm from a vehicle, and shooting into an occupied dwelling. He’s also charged with misdemeanor counts of reckless handling of a firearm, discharging a firearm in the city, and two counts of transporting a firearm while being the subject of a protective order.

Hairston is being held at the Martinsville City Jail without bond. Officers are asking for the public’s help in identifying the driver of the vehicle.

On April 17, 2016, at 9:36 PM, Martinsville Police responded to shots fired in the 100 block of E. Market Street. Once on scene, officers identified the adult male victim who indicated he was approached by two men in a vehicle and after a short conversation, the passenger in the vehicle pulled out a shotgun and began firing at him. Several pellets struck the victim’s clothing but the victim was not injured. The office building in the 200 block of Broad St. was struck by gunfire.

Telvin O’Shea Hairston, 23 year old, of Oak Level Road, Bassett VA was identified as the suspect. Officers later located the suspect vehicle on Northside Drive. Hairston was a passenger in the vehicle and was arrested without incident. Hairston was charged with the following:

Hairston is being held without bond in the Martinsville City Jail. We are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the driver of the suspect vehicle who was described as a bald headed, black male in his 20s as well as any additional information that might be helpful in this matter.
