Bedford organization seeks approval to restore historic Centertown sign

BEDFORD, Va. (WDBJ7) Community leaders want to bring a piece of history back to the town of Bedford, but first they have to clear a government hurdle.

Leaders at Bedford Main Street want to restore a faded Coke advertisement near the corner of North Bridge and Depot Streets.

Most of the old sign is covered with an artistic mural, but remnants can still be seen on the brick facade of a building that borders Depot Street.

Town council will have to approve an update to its sign ordinance before the Coke ad can be reproduced.

"We consulted the neighboring jurisdiction, Roanoke, to see what they did with their historic signs," said Bedford's assistant town manager, Bart Warner. "We're creating an exception that would allow historic signs."

Town council will vote on a recommended update to the sign ordinance at their meeting Tuesday night.
