Police officers, firefighters honored at "Bigs With Badges"

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - Police officers, firefighters, and other men and women with badges were honored Thursday.

These men and women are part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters "Bigs with Badges" program.

The men and women stood next to their assigned little brothers and sisters on the Gainsboro Library grounds. Their little brothers and sisters placed pins on their shirts to show their appreciation.

Each officer in the program is matched with a child in the community.

Jeff Wanner, a big brother and the Resident Agent in charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration, said, "I always wanted to give back, I always wanted to have somebody I could pass some knowledge on, some teaching."

"It's very fun to be with him because he's always there," echoed Wanner's little brother, Quinton Kasey.

They do homework together and support each other through it all.

The "Bigs with Badges" program is part of Big Brothers Big Sisters, which is the nation's largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network.
