Bike share program ready for launch in New River Valley

BLACKSBURG, Va. (WDBJ) -- Roam NRV, the new bike share program jointly run by Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Montgomery County and Virginia Tech, is ready for launch.

"I would say that the regional cooperation would make this program stand out," said Blacksburg Transit director Tom Fox. "I can't imagine there's too many bike share programs in the country that have four partners working together to provide a regional bike share system."

While the official kickoff is August 1, bikers around the NRV will able to start riding as early as this weekend at some stations.

Once the program goes live, users can download the Social Bicycles app. Then, they will create an account through the app and enter the account number into the keypad on the back of the bicycle in order to ride.

Funding from the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation supplied 75 bikes for the program, but more could be on the way.

"Once we launch, we're going to start going out and offering sponsorship packages to local businesses, civic organizations, and other entities that might want to participate financially to help grow the program, both with additional stations and additional bikes," Fox said.

With enough interest and funding, Fox is hopeful the program could expand to even more areas of the New River Valley.

The kickoff event will be a ceremonial ride down the Huckleberry Trail from Christiansburg to Blacksburg on August 1 at 10 a.m.
