Blacksburg begins 10th annual Sustainability Week

BLACKSBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) Blacksburg is celebrating its 10th annual Sustainability Week with ways citizens can be more environmentally friendly.

Monday people were dropping off plastic bags at Warm Hearth Village and exchange them for woven or insulated totes.

Thanks to a $750 grant from Keep Virginia Beautiful, they're able to make sure the bags don't become trash in the streets.

Warm Hearth Village Director of Marketing and Development Tambra Dixon explained, "Taking back plastic bags just keeps them out of the areas where they're not supposed to be. You see them in streams, you see wildlife in danger by them, and they're just crowding landfills. So we'd like for people to use less and less of those and use more of the reusable totes."
