VESTA, Va. (WDBJ7) The Patrick County Sheriff's Office says it has recovered a body from a location near the base of the Lovers Leap overlook in Vesta.
According to a statement from the Patrick County Sheriff's Office, investigators were searching the area Thursday after locating a vehicle near the overlook on Monday. The recovered vehicle belonged to Phillip Daniel Lilly, 62, a man who was reported missing from Henry County a month ago.
Searchers on Thursday descended off of the mountainside at the entrance of Fred Clifton Park, which was a different access point from that used to recover the vehicle. The body was located at approximately 4 Thursday afternoon, several hundred feet below where VDOT employees first discovered the vehicle on Monday.
“At this point, the body will be sent to the medical examiner’s office in Roanoke for autopsy and identification,” Patrick County Sheriff Dan Smith said in a statement. The medical examiner’s findings will play a significant role in determining if foul play exists, according to the sheriff.
