Buchanan community reflects on deadly house fire

BUCHANAN, Va. (WDBJ7) -- The people of Buchanan are remembering a family this evening -- a great-grandmother and two children.

"The Buchanan community in general, you're looking at a population of 2500 in total, we're all friends and family of some sort," said Craig Bryant, a member of the Buchanan Volunteer Fire Company.

And because of that close connection, people are coming together over this recent house fire that took three lives and injured three others.

More than 30 volunteer firefighters worked together to put out the early morning fire, transporting water in tanks.

"We had Troutville, Blue Ridge, we had Fincastle, and then we had Eagle Rock to cover our station and filter any calls," Bryant said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but family members shared with us their feelings about losing loved ones Sandy, Milo, and Jasper.

"Sandy was a kind, loving, giving, and compassionate woman. When her grandchildren and then great-grandchildren came, they gave her new life," said family friend Lori Leonard.

Leonard also said Sandy was a woman of faith and always committed her Sundays to church.

"We all grieve together and we're all going to pick each other up together. We're going to learn from this and comfort the family," Bryant added.

A GoFundMe page was made to get help for the three remaining survivors.
