Buddhist monks visit Roanoke College
Five Buddhist monks are visiting Roanoke College this week, creating an intricate work of art and sharing their knowledge of the Buddhist faith.
The monks are working several hours each day in the Colket Center atrium. They're creating a Mandala, a geometric design that's filled in with colored sand.
Palden serves as a spokesman for the group.
"The creation of the mandala is to bring compassion and harmonious environment," Palden told WDBJ7, "in this college and in the world at large."
The monks are affiliated with Drepung Loseling Monastery in India, which also has a Center for Tibetan Buddhist Studies, Practices and Culture in Atlanta.
Once the mandala is finished, it will be consecrated and then destroyed, reflecting the Buddhist belief that nothing is permanent.
