Carolina Panthers fire head coach Ron Rivera

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera was fired by the team Tuesday; it was announced by owner David Tepper.

According to ESPN, secondary coach Perry Fewell will be named interim head coach of the NFL franchise.

Rivera was hired in 2011 to the position, and earned a 76-63-1 regular-season record. He was 3-4 in the postseason. Rivera helped the team to a Super Bowl appearance, an NFC Championship and three NFC South titles in 9 seasons with the Panthers.

The team sits at 5-7 for the year.
