Around 7:03 a.m., the sewage treatment plant in Narrows noticed a chlorine alarm.

A perimeter was established around the plant around 7:13 a.m. by the Narrows Police Department, Giles County Sheriff's Office and Narrows and Pearisburg Fire Department.

Route 61/MacArthur Lane is closed to provide access to the plant by emergency services personnel.

Norfolk Southern was also notified and stopped train traffic. They have now resumed service.

Hazmat teams from Giles, Celanese, Salem and Roanoke responded and determined that a 150 pound cyclinder of chlorine utilized for disinfection was the source of the leak.

Hazmat teams have contained the leak and are working on removing the tank.

According to the town of Narrows' Facebook page, there is a chlorine leak at the town's sewage treatment plant at 144 MacArthur Ln.

They say hazmat is on scene.

The New River Bridge and Lurich Rd. are closed to traffic.

This is a developing story.
