The candy was not altered by a third party.

A 13-year-old Christiansburg girl got a dangerous surprise when she brought home her haul from trick-or-treating.

She bit into the candy, which had been wrapped in Laffy Taffy packaging, and was struck by what appeared to be a needle, according to police.

Her parents called police on Tuesday night and they took the candy. The candy, packaging and object will be sent for analysis.

The girl went trick-or-treating on Monday in neighborhoods behind Christiansburg High School. Police are asking parents to examine their children's candy.

Police encouraged the girl's parents to seek medical attention for the girl.
