BLACKSBURG, Va. (WDBJ7)— A church in Blacksburg is celebrating a significant milestone this weekend.

The Merrimac Pentecostal Holiness Church is celebrating its 100th anniversary on Sunday.

The church was founded in 1920 by two women, Laura Hylton and Nancy Harmon. Hylton even went on to be a pastor within the first 15 years they were open.

Throughout the years they moved between three buildings on the property as the size of the congregation changed.

Thelma Shelor has been a member of the church for over 80 years. She started attending when she was only three years old and said it’s the love of the church family and God that has kept them together for all of these years.

“It’s good for the community to have a church that’s been here this long, and I think it will be here until the end,” Shelor said.

There will be a special homecoming service at the church starting at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.
