Community Solutions Center making an impact in Roanoke

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) Feeding America Southwest Virginia opened the Community Solutions Center in Roanoke almost a year ago.

And it's already making a positive difference on Melrose Avenue.

The organization invited supporters to take a closer look during an open house on Wednesday.

The kitchen prepares about 500 meals a day for after-school and summer programs.

And 10 people have completed the center's culinary arts program.

Connie Smith is a graduate, now employed as the Kitchen Assistant Manager.

"For me, it's given me something to look forward to in my future, you know, and have a better life for my kids," Smith told WDBJ7.

Two classes have graduated from the culinary arts program so far, and the center hopes to train about 40 students per year.
