Construction begins on Roanoke community kitchen and market

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) Construction started for the new community solution center on Melrose in Roanoke City. Feeding America Southwest Virginia is creating a community kitchen and fresh food market. people from the area will receive culinary training, and after they finish they will create meals for various children's programs in the area. Leaders also say they will have a community counsel to help find solutions problems in the neighborhood.

"It's becoming more o fa reality every time we come to this property," said Pamela Irvin of FASWVA. "We look inside and see the vision being fulfilled and it's exciting."

The building was originally a restaurant and lounge. Contractors have combined three different buildings to create the new center. "To know in a very a few months what is going to take place," said retired Roanoke City police officer Rick Morrison, "There is going to be a place where people can come together, to learn and engage in conversation and change. This is going to be huge."

The organization looks to have the facility ready by March. It will be in full operation by the summer.
