UPDATE: 6 displaced after Roanoke apartment fire

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ7) No one was hurt in an apartment fire in Southeast Roanoke on Wednesday morning.

Black smoke was billowing out of an apartment building on the 500 block of Walnut Ave. SE. A call came in about the fire around 9:30 a.m. It was under control by 10 a.m. The fire started in the bedroom of a first floor apartment, and other apartments have been affected by the smoke. Several residents have been displaced. Six people were evacuated from the Walnut Knoll apartment complex. One person was in the apartment where the fire started, but evacuated the home unharmed.

The cause of the fire was smoking materials. Damage estimates are about $50,000.
