ROANOKE, Va (WDBJ7) A bear in downtown Roanoke caused road closures and a lot of commotion!

Around 2:30 p.m. Monday, Texas Tavern's security camera picked up the black bear running through the parking lot before it ran up a tree on Church Avenue.

For the next few hours, police tried get the bear to come down. But eventually they called in a wildlife specialist.

The bear was hit with two tranquilizer darts which lead him to pass out on a branch.

After the bear fell asleep, the fire department nudged the bear off the branch.

"Luckily we got a dart into the bear and got it out safely and going to take it out of town," said wildlife biologist Dan Lovelace.

Lovelace says while it's uncommon for a bear to be running around downtown, this type of behavior is ordinary for this time of year.

The bear also caught the attention of many people around the city, like Mike Wright.

"I think everybody handled it good and he's safe and he'll get to a good place and you know maybe he'll come back some day," said Mike Wright.
