Crime Prevention Specialist shares tips on preventing porch pirates
It's holiday season, which means more boxes are showing up on our doorsteps. And with those holiday packages comes an uptick in thieves or "porch pirates." We spoke with a Crime Prevention Specialist from the Roanoke Police Department to learn how to prevent this type of theft.
Recommendations include turning on notification systems, so you know when your package has arrived, asking neighbors to pick them up if you're not home and including special instructions if you'd rather the package be delivered somewhere else.
"Now, with the amount of packages we're getting online, people know that and they're looking for these type of opportunities. Not too many people are always just constantly looking to commit crimes, it's really just presenting that opportunity of being there and we just try to limit those," Joshua Johnson, a Crime Prevention Specialist with the Roanoke City Police Department, said.
Johnson says if you get a porch pirate, you should call 9-1-1 and report it.
