"It's very disheartening that we lost another young person, and I'm sure our police department is working diligently to find out who caused this and what happened, but it's also sad on the fact that here's another family that lost a family member. Such a young person at age 17," Danville Mayor Alonzo Jones said.

He reacted to the shooting while away at a conference. He says the city is working hard to combat violence.

"There's so many partners and agencies that are working with the Police Department in trying to engage our young people. We just made an announcement a couple weeks ago, where there's going to be a youth center on the Southside," Jones said.

He says crime in Danville has gone down this year, but the city is continuing to focus on reducing violent crime. He doesn't want to see another life taken too soon.

"We often times say our young people are our future, our young people are our now," he said.

Officers are still investigating the shooting.
