Danville Police Department has a new tool to help keep residents safer.

They now have a drone with an infrared camera.

Lt. Richard Chivvis says the department is still in its infancy stages with the new tool - they haven't even taken it out of the box yet! But in March, 5 officers will receive training on how to use it.

"Primarily we're going to be using this for search and rescue type situations, where a child or an adult may have wandered away, officer safety type sitautions, maybe where we're running a k-9, trying to look for a suspect, escaped inmate something like that. We anticipate using this for any outdoor crime scenes," said Chivvis.

The drone should be used by mid to late spring.
