Danville Police launch app and website to collect tips

DANVILLE, Va. (WDBJ)- There are several ways Danville Police investigate and solve crimes. However, they say there is one resource that is most effective: tips.

Danville's page on the P3 mobile app.

"At the end of the day, what typically helps us solve crimes are people, somebody who knows something, somebody who has heard something." said Lt. Michael Wallace with the Danville Police Department.

Thanks to a local grant from Walmart, the department is now using the P3 app and a new website to operate its initiative, CARE (Community Action Response and Engagement) to receive tips. From there, people can submit statements, pictures, or videos anonymously.

Wallace says this is a key tool, especially from those who may be too nervous to call crimestoppers.

"We can actually share or partner with every citizen that has it, it's not like we are partnering with an organization, we are actually partnering with a citizen or the public." said Wallace.

As violent crime rates have dropped over the last year, this is another tool the department is using to improve its relationship and interactions with the community.

"We hope through our engagement that we can help break down some of those barriers; until some of those are broken down this is another way you can deliver those tips." said Wallace.

The department still encourages people with information to call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 434-793-0000 to submit information.
