DANVILLE, Va. (WDBJ7) -- The Danville Police Department is mourning the loss of one of its own.

Officer Eric Goff died at his home in Patrick County Monday evening, the department said.

Officer Goff grew up in Patrick County and graduated from Patrick County High School in 2015.

He graduated from Piedmont Regional Criminal Justice Training Academy Jan. 1, 2019, and was assigned to patrol. Goff was hired at the police department on April 1, 2018 and named "Officer of the Month" in July 2019. "He is best remembered by his friends and fellow officers as someone who was light-hearted and could make you laugh," the department said in a Facebook post. "The Danville community mourns the loss of one of our officers. Officer Goff was a great police officer and an important member of our department – he will be missed," said Chief Scott Booth.

Officer badges will be shrouded until the day after his funeral.

The department is working to support his family during this time of grieving.
