LYNCHBURG, Va. (WDBJ7) -- A driver was able to escape a frightening situation uninjured Monday morning after their truck slid off the road and partially over a guardrail on Route 501 from Old Forest Road toward Boonsboro.

The accident happened just before 7:30 a.m. Monday at the first bridge on Route 501 before Old Forest Road. Lynchburg police said the bridge was icy and the truck slid off the roadway, then struck the guardrail and began to go over it, coming to a stop by hanging onto the rail by its back tires.

The driver, whose name was not released, avoided injury mainly because of the fact that the rear wheels hung from the guardrail, police noted. The drop below the bridge is approximately 40-50 feet.

No charges are pending, police said.

Officers also mentioned that while responding, other drivers were not slowing down and were sliding on the bridge. Bridges often become icy earlier and remain that way later than other roads.

Police remind all drivers that it is the law to "slow down and move over."
