BLAND CO., Va. (WDBJ7) The man accused of hitting and killing two women, then leaving the scene, told law enforcement he thought he hit a deer. That's according to search warrants filed this week.

Alex Nunley is facing five charges including failure to report an accident and felony hit-and-run.

The warrants explain Nunley smelled of alcohol and told law enforcement he had smoked marijuana the night before.

Investigators found a headlight lens, glass, and tire impressions at the scene. Law enforcement also found two holes through Nunley's Ford Thunderbird windshield and eyeglasses on his dash and front seat.

Connie DeHart and Fran Burgess both died from injuries during the incident.
