Scene declared safe outside Richlands; case transferred
The Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office says the scene on Holy Road has been declared safe.
The office says evidence collections teams will remain in the area to complete the investigation, and people may continue to see a large law enforcement presence at least through Friday.
Evacuated residents have been allowed to return to their homes, and TCSO doesn’t expect further road closures or evacuations unless more items are found.
They say the case has been transferred to the U.S. Attorney and FBI Field Offices out of Abingdon.
The Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office, Virginia State Police and FBI are investigating an incident that happened just outside of the Town of Richlands.
The sheriff’s office says the incident happened on Holy Road, and people may notice a large law enforcement presence in the area in the coming days. Traffic delays and power outages are a possibility in the surrounding area, including Jewell Ridge Road.
As a safety precaution, TCSO says some people in the area were asked to leave their homes temporarily after combustible and explosive materials were found inside and outside a home. Those residents should be able to return late Thursday or Friday, according to the sheriff's office.
