Fire units responded to a house fire near Montvale early Saturday morning.

Around 5:15 a.m., units arrived to a home in the 1200 block of Adventure Mountain Road with a report of heavy fire and someone possibly inside the home.

A crew from Blue Ridge Volunteer Fire Department found the homeowner and only resident, 65-year-old Robert Carter, in a bedroom. When rescuers pulled him out, he was already dead. His body was taken to the medical examiner’s office in Roanoke.

Crews later found Carter’s dog who also died in the fire.

Fire investigators determined that the fire started in Carter’s bedroom and then spread to the rest of the home, which was badly damaged. The damage prevented investigators to determine the exact cause of the fire. There were no working smoke detectors in the home.

Personnel weren’t injured in the fire.
