PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) - Police say the three people killed inside a Pittsylvania County home Friday were related, giving new insight into the tragedy.
Police say this was a domestic situation -- the father, mother, and their 12-year-old son are all deceased. They say it's a huge loss in a small community, and the department is still reeling from a devastating crime."
Police found 44-year-old Jason Owen Davis dead inside a home on Shula Drive in the small community of Hurt, a firearm near his body. He's suspected of killing 42-year-old Twana Rhodes Davis and their 12-year-old son.
Sheriff Michael Taylor of the Pittsylvania County Shrrif's Office said, "Most of those officers who were there last night have children that are same age and you could see it throughout the night on their face, and it can be very emotional for them, couple of them had to take breaks throughout the evening."
Police believe the shots started in the kitchen. Neighbors say they heard them loud and clear.
Neighbor Gordon Reed said, "I thought I'd come up for, to the house to have something to eat and as soon as we walked out the door I heard, pow pow pow pow pow!"
Officers are still trying to establish the motive. The Davis' had another daughter living with them. Though she wasn't home for the shooting, they say she's no less a victim of this tragedy.
"I hate to hear it, I hate to hear that somebody got shot," Reed added.
Police say they were first alerted to the shooting when two more victims -- Twana's mother and aunt -- drove to a gas station for help. They were both hospitalized with gunshot wounds but expected to survive.
